Lake Chad Basin Project

From: $5.00

The Lake Chad Basin is a place of three extremes: extreme climate, extreme poverty and extreme ideologies. It’s also home to many least-reached people groups—those without a church that preaches the gospel in their own language and in a culturally relevant way.

This region is the site of one of the worst ecological crises in the world. Due to excessive irrigation, Lake Chad has shrunk by 90 percent since the 1960s, turning once-fertile land into desert. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) predicts that the lake could disappear within the 21st century.

This environmental crisis deeply impacts the 17 million people who depend on Lake Chad for their survival. Over 6 million are facing severe food insecurity and many more are being stripped of their livelihoods. Competition over existing resources, as well as the presence of extremist groups such as Boko Haram, have led to ongoing tension and conflict. Many people have been displaced from their homes.

The majority of these people are also without eternal hope. The Lake Chad Basin is home to many least-reached people groups that no one is trying to reach with the gospel. But, the growing environmental crisis provides an open door for outreach.

Through Eden Vigil, a ministry of Christar that serves and mobilizes those who combine church planting and creation care among least-reached peoples, Christar is exploring opportunities for environmental ministry in the Lake Chad Basin. In early 2018, an Agabus Team was sent to the region to conduct interviews and complete research regarding strategies for long-term outreach.

Based upon the findings of the Agabus team, long-term Christar teams will be sent to bless the people and environment of the Lake Chad Basin, while sharing the good news about the Creator and seeking to establish reproducing churches. By God’s grace, multiple teams will be ministering in this region by 2020.

Pray for the Lake Chad Basin Project:

  • Ask God to guide members of the Agabus Team, giving them the experiences and insight they need to provide information that will enable Christar to pursue an effective long-term ministry strategy in the Lake Chad Basin.
  • Ask God to provide the funds needed to cover the Agabus Team’s travel while in the Lake Chad Basin.
  • Pray that many churches will be established in the area surrounding Lake Chad as a result of this project.

Giving through is safe and secure.
