Joining Christar is an exciting process. It’s also a thorough one! We want you to be well-equipped for cross-cultural service. Christar mentors are here to counsel, encourage and pray with you at every step along the way.
- Talk to your church leadership about your desire to serve.
- Explore opportunities, roles and locations of service.
- Complete a Preliminary Information Form and one of our mentors will contact you personally. You can also contact the Christar Mobilization team at [email protected].
If you and Christar’s Mobilization team discern that it’s time to move ahead, we will walk you through the application process, including the submission of documents like post-high school transcripts and references.
Once you have completed the application process and been approved, you’ll start attending orientations and trainings to help you prepare for ministry.
- New Personnel Orientation (NPO)
NPO is a two-week conference held each year in January and July in Richardson, Texas. At NPO, we’ll help you get to know Christar and prepare you for effective ministry among the least-reached. Personal interviews, group training sessions, team building exercises and personality and marriage (if applicable) assessments will also be used to help guide and prepare you. An invitation to attend NPO is a conditional offer of employment, conditioned upon board approval and passing a medical examination.
- Fundraising Training
- Language Acquisition Training
Here you’ll learn the underlying principles of how to learn a language. This course needs to be completed within six months prior to your departure.
- Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO)
Once you reach a minimum of 60 percent support and are within six months of departure for the field, you will attend PDO. This two-week training program is held during January and July in Richardson, Texas. Here, you’ll receive further training for cross-cultural ministry, and the Board of Trustees will vote to approve you for official membership and employment.
A Personal Development Plan will be tailored specifically to you. This plan is designed to help you effectively prepare for ministry among the least-reached.
- Perspectives Course
Perspectives gives believers from all walks of life fresh understanding of God’s plan to redeem people from every tribe, tongue and nation for Himself. If you haven’t already taken this course, you’ll need to take it before leaving for the field. Find a course in your area.
If you are moving toward ministry among Muslim people, you’ll participate in Manarah. These annual courses combine academic learning with daily opportunities to share with least-reached people in the community. You may apply to attend the training prior to NPO.
You may be required, or you may desire, to serve a six-12 month tailored apprenticeship to help equip you for future cross-cultural ministry. You’ll be mentored by an experienced Christar worker as you participate in cross-cultural church ministry and outreach. Most apprenticeships are completed in Dallas.
After NPO, you’ll also begin “pre-field ministry,” building a team of prayer and financial partners who will support you along the way.
- Your Sending Church
Every Christar worker is required to have a sending church before leaving for the field. Christar partners with churches—we do not take the place of the church. After NPO, your church will be required to sign a Church Partnership Agreement.
- Your Sending Team
As you communicate God’s passion for the world and tell the story of His work in your life, churches and individuals will partner with you through prayer and financial support. Every long-term Christar worker is required to have 100 partners committed to daily prayer for his/her ministry.
Once you’ve completed all trainings and your Pre-departure Orientation (PDO), and have developed your support team, you’ll be cleared to make travel arrangements and set a date for departure. As you join your team, we will continue to pray for you, support you and encourage you as you go.
