What do short-term workers do?
The short answer? All kinds of things! Check out our current opportunities for some ideas of how you might be able to help a Christar team.
What if I don’t see a specific opportunity that fits my skills and interests?
Our staff can design a unique opportunity for you. Contact us at [email protected] to discuss how we might tailor a trip to your gifts and experience.
How long does it take to get ready for a short-term trip?
Preparation for a short-term trip normally takes at least three to four months. This includes filling out the application, raising the necessary financial and prayer support, completing training and obtaining the necessary immunizations.
How much support will I need?
Christar’s mobilization team and the team on your field of ministry will work together to create a reasonable working budget for your short-term ministry. An estimated budget will be shared with you during the application process. We place a high priority on prayer support as well as financial support. Before you leave for short-term ministry, you are required to have at least 10 prayer partners committed to pray for you daily.
Are the cost estimates listed for your opportunities all-inclusive?
All of the costs listed on our website are estimates and are subject to change. The estimates include food, lodging, visas and ground travel. Unless noted otherwise, listed costs do not include airfare, travel insurance, immunizations, Christar short-term training (e.g., Blaze) or personal items such as souvenirs. Costs to obtain a passport, if you do not already have one, will also be additional. We encourage short-term participants to raise support for all of their ministry costs and fees.
How much will travel cost?
The cost of round-trip airfares to most ministry fields is between $1,200 and $1,900. Ticket prices vary based on time of purchase, the departure/ return airport, fuel cost and ticket demand. Airline tickets should be purchased no later than two months prior to your departure date. Ticket prices are likely to increase daily within the two-month window prior to overseas travel.
When do I have to have my financial support raised?
You will need to have 50 percent of your ministry funds raised no later than two months prior to your field departure date; 100 percent of your ministry funds must be raised no later than three weeks prior to your field departure date.
What is Blaze? Do I have to attend?
Blaze is a required four-day training event for anyone participating in a short-term trip that is three weeks or longer in duration. It’s a strategic time of spiritual, relational, logistical and cultural training. Our goal is for you to leave encouraged and ready for service! Training expenses, including hotel, meals and materials, are included in funds to be raised for your trip. Transportation costs to and from Dallas are separate, but may be reimbursed if you have excess funds after all other expenses are paid.
Can a team from my church do a short-term trip with Christar?
Yes! Contact us at [email protected] to start a conversation about what opportunities are available.
Can a Christar short-term opportunity fulfill my internship requirements for school?
Often, our specific experiences will satisfy college or seminary internship requirements! It is your responsibility to communicate with our Mobilization team, your Christar field hosts and academic institutions regarding internship requirements. It is also your responsibility to obtain authorization from your school to proceed with the short-term opportunity.
