Partnership for Hope and Healing Among Refugees in the Middle East: AWT and ACCTS in action

Hanan* had witnessed seemingly endless killing and tragedy. The mother and sister of fighters, her life was devastated by the conflicts tearing up her homeland in the Middle East. Her brother had lost his life. One of her sons was left paralyzed from a serious injury. By the time she left her country as a refugee, she was tired of sorrow and consumed with anger and a desire for vengeance.

Hanan is far from alone: millions like her in the Middle East are suffering due to political upheaval and instability. Refugees are flooding into neighboring countries, often bringing with them few possessions, heavy spiritual and emotional burdens and little hope. In the midst of this upheaval, Christar provides hope and help to refugees through two ministries: Arab Woman Today Ministries (AWT) and the Arab Center for Consulting and Training Services (ACCTS).

Arab Woman Today (AWT)

Arab Woman Today Ministries trains Christian women to meet the emotional needs of refugees using biblical truths. Once trained, believers conduct a series of workshops to help refugee women, many of them widows, recover from their traumatic experiences and move forward in their new surroundings.

God used these workshops to change Hanan’s life. Workers at AWT saw evidence of this transformation during the first session she attended. Her workshop leader shared, “After she had listened to the lecture, she opened her heart. This started the healing. … One could feel the change in [her] attitude at the end of the session.”

When Hanan arrived for the second workshop, she was like a completely different person. Her workshop leader commented, “She was happy and had stopped talking about death and taking revenge.”

Arab Center for Consulting and Training Services (ACCTS)

Founded in 2012 and officially recognized by the refugee relief arm of the United Nations, ACCTS is a humanitarian organization led by a Christar worker. In 2014 ACCTS distributed 12,000 food packages, each of which feeds a family of five or six for one month. During winter months, they have also supplied heaters, fuel coupons and blankets to over 600 families and worked with AWT to provide a series of group counseling workshops to meet the needs of 800 refugee women.

A place to grow

As ministries of Christar, ACCTS and AWT collaborate on more than just refugee relief: These growing ministries share some staff and since 2012, they’ve shared a facility, occupying one floor of a multi-story building. The over 4,000-square-foot facility includes a training center that accommodates 30 to 50 trainees, a private space for counseling, a resource room and staff offices.

We praise God for using the joint ministry of AWT and ACCTS to meet the emotional, physical and spiritual needs of refugees! The Lord continues to open doors for these organizations.

That’s why we’re inviting you to help them devote more of their energy and resources to seizing these opportunities. These organizations are seeking to pay off the short-term loan on their shared facility so that they can focus more fully on ministry. They’re asking God to provide people who will give to help them meet this goal.

Will you prayerfully consider partnering with Christar to support these strategic ministries? Your gift to the ACCTS and AWT building fund will enable these organizations to change the lives of many more like Hanan.

How can I get involved?

Pray:

  • That God will continue to use ACCTS and AWT to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of refugees.
  • That God will continue to help ACCTS efficiently distribute aid to needy refugees.
  • That God would supply the funds needed to enable these ministries to pay off the short-term loan on the administration and training facility they share, so that both organizations can put all their resources toward funding and expanding their work.
